Roy Varghese Palatty is a Catholic religious priest belonging to the congregation of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). Presently, he is working as the Spiritual Director of Shalom TV (English Section). He is also serving as a visiting professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, a Pontifical Athenaeum of Philosophy, Theology, and Canon Law. He is also known for his spiritual talks and renewal programmes.






Birth and Family
Roy Varghese Palatty was born in a Christian family on 17 March 1975 in the state of Kerala near Angamaly. Since he was born and brought up in Kerala his mother tongue is Malayalam. But at present he is well equipped in the languages like English, German and Sanskrit.
Education
Roy completed his primary education in his hometown and later he moved to Sree Sankara College, Kalady, for his higher studies. After completing his undergraduate studies, he joined the congregation of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). He belongs to the Sacred Heart Province, Kochi; after completing his initial formation, he made his first religious profession on 8 September 1999.
           After his philosophical and theological studies at Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bengaluru, he was ordained a priest in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church on 2 January 2005. Soon after his ordination Roy pursued his Licentiate in Philosophy at DVK during 2006-2008.
          Soon after completing Licentiate in Philosophy, he was invited to teach in the Faculty of Philosophy at DVK.  Later, he awarded a Doctorate in Philosophy from the Higher Institute of Philosophy, at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. Earlier, he pursued his degrees in Arts and Commerce (BCom) at Sree Sankara College, Kalady, Arts and Commerce (MCom) at St. Albert’s College, Ernakulum, Bachelor of Philosophy (BPh) and Bachelor of Theology (BTh) from Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bengaluru, Bachelor of Education (BEd) from MG University, Kottayam, Commerce (MPhil) from MK University, Chennai; he also secured State Eligibility Test (SET) at Government of Kerala in the year 2006.
Contributions       
Since Roy Palatty holds so many degrees in the educational field, his contributions in the field of education and his teaching experience are very much notable. He started his occupational background by teaching Introduction to Philosophy at DVK and later on he moved to Kerala to teach Business and Management in SH Higher Secondary School in the academic year 2005-2006. He was also teaching in Rajagiri School of Management and Technology, Kakkanad, Cochin.
          Roy is very much interested to teach philosophy and has taught subjects like Metaphysics, Asian and Chinese Philosophies, Social and Applied Ethics, Existentialism and Phenomenology. He also offers courses like Philosophy of Education and Globalization and Development. He offers seminars like Social Philosophy and Meditations on Market Economy.
Writings    
Wonderful ideas and thoughts of Roy Palatty are very clearly seen in his writings. He has authored many books on relevant themes. He has not translated books from English to Malayalam but also has authored books in Malayalam. Some of his works in Malayalam are Jeevante Thudippukal (Malayalam, a pro-life study) in 2003; Rosarium Virgins Mariae by John Paul II (translation) 2004; Eccelesia de Eucharitia by John Paul II (Translation) 2004; Albhuthagalude Jalakam (a study on the ten miracles of Jesus) 2005; Desadakante Vicharangal (reflections on life) 2008; Peruvazhiyante Pinnale (reflections on life) 2008.
          In English, Roy Palatty has authored Cathedrals of Development: A Critique on AmartyaSen’s Developmental Model, 2009 and On the Currency of Social Justice: Theoreis of John Rawls and Amartya Sen (2016)..Dr. Palatty is also very much interested in writing articles in books and scientific journals. Some of his articles are “Blessed Chavara: An Acharya of the Art of Loving,” published in Herald of the East, in 2007, “Human Development and Transcendent Humanism in Amartya Sen,” Journal of Dharma in 2007, “Prodigal Freedom and Asymmetric Violence: A Development Audit,” Journal of Dharma in 2009, “In Search of Reality: Rehabilitating the Question of Being and Existence,” New Horizons of Indian Christian Living in 2009, “Permanent Revolution and Perpetual Peace: Revisiting Kantian Cosmopolitanism,” Journal of Dharma in 2010, “Health Equity and Social Justice: Toward a Paradigm of Capability to be Healthy,” The Living Word in 2010. He has also offered book review like “Charles Irudayam: Towards an Ethical Framework for Poverty Eradication: A Critical Reflections on Amartya Sen’s Capability Theory in the Light of Catholic Social Teaching,” Asian Horizons in 2011 .
          He also participated and contributed to in international Conferences and Symposiums. He presented a paper on “Economic Life and Human Transcendence: A Paradigm for Everyday Spirituality” with Antoon Vandevele, International Conference on Mysticism without Bounds. He is a well-acclaimed preacher and a writer. Roy is currently very busy by working as the General Editor of Sunday Shalom and a regular contributor to the Catholic weeklies and newspapers. He is actively involved in the Shalom Movement, with its mass media and publications. He preaches the Word of God all around the globe: from India, United States, Canada, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, and other places. He conducts retreats for seminarians, priests, religious sisters, and college students.

          At present, Roy Palatty lives in the USA and also teaches philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy, DVK, Bengaluru.
